Also known as Mount Horeb or Gabal Musa, Mount Sinai is possibly the same mountain where Moses has spoken to God. For this reason, another name it is called oftentimes is Mount Moses. It is therefore considered a biblical site by religious Catholics, who consider it to be a holy and blessed place of worship. It has been mentioned many times in the bible, particularly in the book of Exodus, and also mentioned in the Quran. It is believed to be the place where Moses received the Ten Commandments from God.
Mount Sinai, is, therefore, a holy land pilgrimage site, and often visited by devout Catholics all year round. The summit of Mount Sinai is moderately high at 2,285 meters(7,497 feet) above sea level. It is surrounded by higher peaks to form a mountain range, including Mount Catherine at 2,629 meters( 8,625 feet).
A lot of historical events purportedly took place in Mount Sinai. Many of the early churches or synagogues were built here. some of those churches are still around today, and is one of the favorite tourist destinations in Egypt. Saint Catherine Monastery lies at the mouth of the Sinai Peninsula, and is home to the Saint Catherine Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site as the oldest working monastery existing today.
At least 1 million tourists visit this holy place every year, which goes to show how truly popular and magnificent it is. The place has a significant aura which only the faithful could explain or comprehend. It is believed that the tablets of stone in which God commanded Moses to write down the 10 Commandments are believed to have come from the summit of Mount Sinai.
